GATES URGED

NEED FOR HARBOUR BRIDGE ! STRESSED AUCKLAND, 12th April. 1 Provision of a gate at the top of the ; ramp at each landing on the Auckland- i Devonport vehicular ferry service was ! by the council of the Automobile j Association (Auckland), at a meeting ; to-night. This decision w r as made after j discussion of the tragic drowning of two young women at Devonport on Tuesday night. The president, Mr F. G. Farrell, said he was sure the sympathy of all members of the council would go out to the relatives of the victims. In addition to suggesting the construction * of a gate at the top of the ramp as [ necessary, Mr Farrell considered the association should make further repre- ! sentations regarding the harbour j bridge. In his opinion people were j putting up with an out-of-date system lin Auckland. The secretary, Mr G. W. I Hutchison, said that on Monday from 1 j o clock in the afternoon to 10 o’clock I | at night there was a long queue of 3 j motor cars in Devonport waiting to j cross the harbour. At one stage the j (queue stretched as far back at Chel- j

tenham road. It had taken an hour ; and a quarter to get on board the ferry. I The council decided to write to the J Prime Minister drawing his attention to the uraent need for the harbour i bridge and urging the Government to | take action.
