ART EXHIBITION

NELSON SUTER ART SOCIETY (INC.) AN INTERESTING DISPLAY The Suter Art Society forwards the appended notes on the oils’ section of the 'exhibition. . The autumn exhibition of the Nelson , Suter Art Society (Inc.) which is now [ open, is being well attended by Nelson art lovers. Once again an attrac- ■ tive show has been arranged. There is . a preponderance of water-colours, but oils and photography are also well re- : presented. In the craft section, we would like to see more work, but what is exhibited is of a uniformly high . standard. The exhibition is open daily from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and from 2 to . 5 p.m. ! The following artists exhibit oil-col- ’ ours: Marcus King has an attractive screen of eight pictures. “The Paddlers,” 1 which was hung at the Coronation Exhibition in 1937. shows a very successful treatment of greens. “Seascape” is an outstanding picture, in which he has managed to convey all the force of waves dashing against the rocks. ■ combined with a delicate treatment of sun-lit spray. “Morning, Rona Bay” is notable for its well-drawn figures and ■ glistening water. His two moonlight studies. “The Moon-lit Gully” and “Moon-lit Sea.” are interesting and quite different from his other pictures. ! W. H. Allen. A.R.C.A.. has two pictures hung. “Head of a Girl.” a de- . lightful study, and “Rain over Auck- ! land,” an unusual and very pleasing : picture combining subtle tones of green ; and grey. Leo Bensemann's three oil-colours are creating considerable interest among j visitors. “St. Francis” and “St. Olaf” , are very decorative studies, and his . “Portrait of a Young Man” is a force- , ful piece of work. This artist has in- ■ dividuality. and it Will be interesting to watch his progress. Maurice Kerr's “Landscape” is a very attractive study in blues and greens. 1 painted in his usual accomplished manRalph Patterson uses very clean. • bright colour, and “The Bathing Pool' and “Autumn at Stoke” are both good examples of his work. In the former, he has been very successful with the grouping of the figures. Marjorie Naylor's palette knife sketch. “Sunset.” is an interesting departure. Hugh Scott shows two contrasting ’ studies. “Seance in Red Light” and “In My Garden,” a colourful out-door Rose Vitetta exhibits a portrait study “Luigi.” T. Blake Huffam. the Society’s oldest working member (in his 90th year) is represented by “Poranari”, “Ikamatua and "Torrent Bay.” A. Harris has "Port Nelson” hangj ing and J. A. Galbraith has portrayed , a group of uniformed figures in “Territorials.” ; M. L. Woollaston is represented by a ; charcoal drawing "Woman and Child". ? and “Portrait” a pencil sketch. I W. Houlker exhibits five pleasing pastels —“Kaikoura Road.” “Tahuna ? Beach.” “Appleby Road.” “Port Nel- ! son.” and “Lake Rotoiti.” . j All the above pictures have their . : special interest.
