LORD NUFFIELD MEETS OLD SCHOOLMATE

DAYS IN OXFORD RECALLED I United I'reM Aewuciallonl WELLINGTON, 9th March. Two former schoolmates, one Lord Nuffield, the other Mr Frederick Polly, 1 of McAlpine street, Wellington, met :n Wellington last night and exchanged ' pleasant reminiscences of their schooldays at Cowley College School, Oxford. Mr Polly, who has not seen Oxford, the town of his birth, for 21 years, discovered that his former schoolmaster was. still alive, and still corresponded with and visited Lord Nuffield, and also that his old father's home, unlike many of the old residences of Oxford, i lias so far defied the march of progress and was still standing. Oxford 1 has no tramcars, which are prohibited j by the city authorities. Lord Nuffield has a genuine affeci tion for the New Zealand people, of i whom he speaks very favourably. In England, he told Mr Polly, manners and customs had changed very little, ; and the strict code of discipline was | still apparent among all classes. It | seemed strange to him to hear New, ] Zealand people calling each other Bob.! Dick, or Harry, but he supposed it! ' was just a natural custom here. ! The members of the New Zealand Cabinet were described by Lord Nuf- , field as a “fine set of chaps.” He had noticed a great improvement in the 10'ads in New Zealand since he was here first eleven years ago. he said, and he appreciated the fact that quite a lot of it was due to the Hon. R. Semple, whom he considered a “man who got things done.” Lord Nuffield returned to England by the Rangitiki to-day.
