COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

WORK ON ROADS AND BRIDGES I From Our Own Correspondent) Councillor J. Downie (chairman) presided at the recent meeting of the Murchison County Council, others present being Councillors E. M. Brown, J. T. Baigent, T. O. Morel, J. Rait, and F. W. Newman. Councillor Morel moved a motion of sympathy with the chairman and the relatives of the late Mrs Goodyer, and also with the sons and daughters of the late Mrs Neame. Councillor Morel and other Councillors congratulated Councillor Newman on his success in the recent election for member of the Nelson Education Board. Councillor Newman thanked the Councillors for their kind remarks. The following accounts as certified were passed for payment: General Account, £1065 3s 2d; Hydro Account, £l9B 13s 2d; Diesel Account. £5 17s 7d. On the motion of Councillors Morel and Rait it was decided that Linesman C. H. Gibson be paid a car allowance of £1 per month as from Ist January, 1939. Councillor Baigent congratulated the Electrical Engineer. Mr Merson, on the completion of the erection of the Diesel stand-by plant, which was an asset to the County, and he suggested that as soon as the plant was passed by the Public Works Department an official opening be held so that the ratepayers could inspect the plant. Mr Merson thanked the Councillors for their remarks. WHEELER’S CREEK BRIDGE Arising out of the Assistant Overseer’s report it was decided that the Messrs Borcovsky be offered the sum of £lO to erect a suitable bridge at Wheeler’s creek, 10ft wide with guard rails, otherwise that a stock track be made. CORRESPONDENCE The Main Highways Board advised that it was prepared to subsidise work of improving the visibility at corners. The Public Works Depa/iment returned proposals approved for Irvine’s access. The Public Works Department advised that the subsidy for engineering services would be paid on all Government grants. The Public Works Department advised that a grant of £IOO, £3 for £l, had been made for Brewery Creek, access to Whitfords. The Public Works Department advised that it was prepared to hire the compressor for work at the Owen. The Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarded a copy of the Gazette transferring Sec. 47, town of Murchison, to the County. The Mining Registrar asked the Council to recommend to the Minister of Mines that the sum of £7 6s Od owing by the Maruia Gold Ltd. for rent, be written off, under Section 440 of the Mining Act. On the motion of Councillors Morel and Rait, it was decided that the Minister be recommended to write the amount off as irrecoverable. Dr. W. J. Dickel, of Runanga, accepted the position of Medical Officer of the district. Mr. D. von Sturmer, accepted the position of County Engineer and advised that he would take up his duties on Ist February, 1939. Messrs V. and A. Borcovsky wrote in reference to the erection of Wheeler’s Creek bridge. This matter was dealt with earlier in the meeting under the Assistant Overseer’s report. Mr M. L. Russ asked the Council to consider taking over a portion of his road as a public road. The Public Works Department forwarded approval of a proposal for work on the Longford-Raits road access to Thurlow’s. The Public Works Department asked when the proposals for Glengarry road would be submitted. It was decided to advise the Department that this will be one of the first jobs that the new County Engineer will do. The Public Works Department returned proposals for work cn the Brewery Creek road, access to Sewell’s, and the Longford to Rait’s road, access to Win’s. On the motion of Councillors Rait and Brown it was decided that tenders i be called when the necessary authorities are received. B. F. Spiers Transport Ltd. offered the sum of £5 for the old horse grader. This matter was held over in the meantime as the grader is on loan to the Labour Department on the formation of the Poreka track. TENDERS FOR OWEN RIVER WORK On the motion of Councillors Morel and Baigent it was resolved that J. P. Robinson’s tender of £75. being the lowest tender, be accepted for the Owen river road work giving access to Irvir^s. Councillor Morel asked that before the men under No. 13 Scheme started work on the Tutaki road, that the chairman, assistant overseer, and himself go over the road to see what corners were , to be removed.
