BOY SCOUTS

INITIATION CEREMONY PRESENTATION TO MR N. H. COZENS [From Oi.r Own Correspondent) MOTUEKA, This Day. Mr N. 11. Cozens, who has been Scoutmaster of the Motueka Troop for the past eighteen months was last evening farewelled by the scouts, parents and members of the committee, prior to his departure to take up a position in NelDuring the early part of the evening an investiture ceremony was performed by the Seoul master, three boys—Sam Llewellyn, Ashley Thomason, and Eymard Curtain being initiated. After the boys had received their badges a one-year star was presented to Dick Warner. Mr Cozens then delivered an impressive address, dealing with the scout promise—duty to God and to the King, the scout motto, “Be Prepared’’ and the daily good deeds and opportunities to help others. Mr Cozens aiso explained in an interesting way the ten scout laws impressing upon the boys the importance of their observance. Before bidding farewell to the boys, Mr Cozens said the troop would also be losing one of its patrol leaders, William Davies. They regretted his coming departure because of the great help he had always given, but hoped he would continue to enjoy scouting in Nelson, his future place of residence. To fill the vacancy created Second Bernard James was appointed Leader of the Morepork PatIn reply Patrol Leader Davies expresse 1 regret at leaving the troop stating that lit had enjoyed the scout meetings and association with the other scouts. NEW SCOUTMASTER WELCOMED A welcome to Mr E. Light, the newly appointed scoutmaster, was extended by Mr Cozens and by Mr G. Manifold, who spoke on behalf of the committee. Mr Light thanked all for their kindly welcome. Many residents of the district would, he said, hear with regret of Mr Cozens’ impending departure. Although they were losing him the work ho. had done would live on. Speaking to the boys Mr Light said “We will work together as a team and endeavour to make life happy for those with whom we come in contact.” PRESENTATION TO SCOUTMASTER Patrol Leader Bernard James presented Mr Cozens with a handsome clock, suitably inscribed, as a token of appreciation for his work in the interests of the troop, from the scouts, parents and committee. Returning thanks lor the gift Mr Cozens said the clock would have a place of honour in his new home and would serve to remind him of his happy association with the Motueka scouts and members of tile committee. Subsequent to the dispensing of a bountiful supper, a number of the scouts took part in a haka, receiving hearty applause for their performance. Before leaving the hall each scout was handed a letter containing details of the New Zealand Jamboree, to take place from 27th December, 1939, to Uth January, 1940, at Heretaunga, 14 miles from Wellington. ~
