CARRIERS' CHARGES

INCREASE AT CHRISTCHURCH (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 30th January. An increase of 6d a ton on all cartage charges by city and suburban carriers will come into force on Wednesday. A decision to take this step was made recently by a largely-attended meeting of the Christchurch and Suburban Carriers and Customhouse Agents’ Association. The general rise in wages and other costs was cited as the principal reason for the increase. A price-fixation scheme along the lines of that recently arranged by the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority for carriers outside the exempted area was considered desirable by the majority of those present. It was considered desirable to forward a suitable remit for consideration at the forthcoming conference of the transport industry in Wellington on 20th February.
