HELD BY NELSON COMMITTEE 200 MEMBERS OF AFFILIATED ORGANISATIONS PRESENT MEMBER FOR MOTUEKA vVELCOMED A very successful smoke concert and social was held by the Nelson L.R.C. in the Labour Hall on Saturday evening. About 200 members of affiliated organisations were present. In the absence of the president, Mr J. B. Carr, who was unavoidably detained in the country, the chair was taken by Mr D. Horlor, vice-president. The guests of the evening tvere Mr F. Skinner, M.P. for Motueka, members of the Motueka I L.R.C., and the presidents of the Inangahua branch N.Z.L.P., and the Nelson branch of the P. and T. Association. Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P. for Wairau, was to have been present, but was detained in Blenheim on official busines, and sent a , telegram of apology for his absence. | The chairman in his opening address expressed his pleasure at the large attendance, and extended a very hearty welcome to all. He was pleased to notice that each of the 25 affiliated organisations was well represented. He congratulated Mr Skinner on his election to Parliament, and the Motueka L.R.C. for the successful result at the past elections, and hoped that in the future the Nelson L.R.C. v/ould be equally successful. Mr Skinner, the chief guest of the evening, on rising, was accorded musical honours. He congratulated the NelL son L.R.C. on its progress, and express- ! ed his pleasure at being present to meet so many Nelson party supporters. He L spoke of the growth of the Labour ! Party from its inception, and pointed out how much the benefits enjoyed by L the people to-day were due to the sacJ rifices of the old die-hard pioneers of the movement. He hoped the Nelson , organisation would carry on its activi--1 ties vigorously so that it would be ready when the 1941 call came. During the evening the following toasts were proposed and drunk with musical honours: The King; Mr Skinner, j M.P., Motueka, proposed by Mr D. HorI lor, replied to by Mr Skinner; The Nelson L.R.C., proposed by Mr L. Ward, president Nelson branch, Mr Horlor replying; the N.Z. Labour Party in Parliament. proposed by Mr Taylor, Mr Skinner replying; the affiliated organisations to Nelson L.R.C., proposed by Mr T. Conibear. Mr De Pina, president l Drivers’ Union, replying; the Motueka . L.R.C., proposed by Mr Bennett, presi- ; dent Hira branch, replied to by Mr Edwards (secretary Motueka L.R.C.); [ the P. and T. Association, proposed by r Mr Haase, Mr Edie, president of the P. » and T. Association, replying; and fin- , ally the Right Hon. M. J. Savage, proposed by Mr Horlor, and honoured with - vociferous cheers and enthusiasm. . During the evening musical items were rendered by members of the Nelson Musicians’ Affiliated Union (orchestral); the Accordeon Band from the Wangamoa Blue Hills’ Union; cornet solo. Mr Coombs; trombone solo. Mr N. Whitwell. Songs were also contributed by Messrs Barnes, Connell and Brownson, and were much appreciated. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all present, and community singing to 'he accompaniment of the orchestra and accordeon band was entered into heartily. After the singing at “Auld Lang Syne” all present were unanimous in expressing their appreciation and the I hope that the Nelson L.R.C. wi’l carry en it- social activities. f- hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr E. C. Pahl, secretary of the social committee, who organised the social.
