IN THE MANAWATU

K.N'FORCEMENT OF PROPOSALS LIKELY PALMERSTON N., 30th January. The elimination of counter lunches and the curtailment of “shouting” will probably be enforced in the near future by licensed victuallers in the Manawatu, said the president of the Manawatu Licensed Victuallers’ Association, Mr F. I. Colvin, and the secretary, Mr E. V. Spear, when interviewed to-day. There was a meeting of the association last Thursday to consider the question and all but three members agreed with the proposals. The matter was freely discussed but was held over for finality till Thursday next. * Mr Colvin said that a determined effort was being made throughout the Dominion to secure universal action, but before this was possible it was necessary for the various centres to be unanimous. In Manganui a decision had been made to eliminate counter lunch and to curtail “shouting” as from Ist February. Both Mr Colvin and Mr Spear gave mounting overhead expenses as the reason for the action of licensed victuallers. “They just keep mounting and mounting.” Mr Spear said. “Last month we had another wages increase and something had to be done.”
