BURNS NIGHT

PIPE BAND CELEBRATION The anniversary of the Scottish national barb was celebrated in Nelson under the auspices of the City Pipe Band. Mr N. A. Harley, vice-president, presided over a very representative gathering of members and supporters. Although of an impromptu nature the function proved to be a very happy one S and the executive wishes to thank those i who contributed materially to its suc- ! cess. The toast to the “Immortal MemI ory” was proposed by Mr N. A. Harley who spoke of the influence of the poet lon the Scottish race and character. ; “Blather Scots at Hame and Abroad” ! was proposed bv Major C,. Jamieson I and responded to by Mr Nat Brownlie. The toast “The Pipe Band” was in the hands of the Mr -Jock'’ Fingland and replied by by the chairman. A special feature of the evening was two short addresses “Tartan” by Mr D. W. Anderson and “Bagpipes” by Pipe-Sergeant E. J. C. Hay. Both addresses were very interesting and were well received. During the evening the following contributed to the programme: Mr M. Cuthbert, Pipe-Major Banks, PipeSergeant Hay, S.N. Short, Piper Rae, C. Gillespie, Piper L. Large and Mr A. S. Davidson. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought to a close a very pleasant evening.
