LETTERS TO ALICE

Dear Alice, I thought I would write to you and tell you about my holiday. Dad took us all down to Dunedin to see Granny. They have a cottage at Warrington, and I had some bathes in the surf. Ugh! It was such cold water. There were such crowds of people in the shops at Christmas and all the motors and tram cars made it hard to cross the streets. I did have a lovely time and when in Christchurch on our way back, I had a long tram tide to Siimner. I hope you had a good holiday. —From Robin Salmond (9 years), R.M.D., Upper Mouterc. # * * * Dear Alice, I hope you are quite well as I am, and hope you had a good Christmas as I did. My Mother and brother are on a holiday so I have a good time. The maid and my other sister and I manage the house work. Have you ever been up Foxhill way yet? I have been to the skating rink in Nelson three times. Have you? Wfe skate in our big shed. I can skate all right. Cheerio. Love from, Pat Best (10 years), Foxhill. * * Deui’ Alice, I am very sorry I have not written to you for so long. We had some greut fun over the Christmas and New Year at Lake Rotoiti. A friend of ours drove one car and my Uncle drove his car. I felt rather sick when I got there but when we lit the fire I was all right. One night our friend dressed as a ghost, held a torch under his face and walked around the house, so we all call him “ghost.” We didn't want to come home in the end. New Year’s Eve was the night we had lots of fUn because we went down the road at midnight with torches and an accordian, drum, mouth-organs and the “ghost” kept winding the alarm on the clock and making it ring. We had two punctures coming back, one on Spooner’s Range and the other just this side of Spooner’s. Sincerely yours, Vivian Haase (11 years), 67 Weka Street, Nelson.
