The picture shows the new twin screw motor ship Puriri which will shortly take her place in the Anchor Shipping: and Foundry Company’s fleet of coastal traders. The vessel, w'hich is due at Auckland on 31st January, and Nelson about sth February, was launched at Leith on 24th October, 1938, by Mrs A. Irvine Brown, of Nelson, and after trials at the end of November, sailed for New Zealand via Panama. Her master is Captain W. MacMillan, and chief engineer, Mr D. J. Paton, both of the Anchor Company service. Built by Henry Robb Ltd., under the supervision of the Anchor Company’s marine superintendent, and director of the Company, Mr A. Irvine Brown, the Puriri is of the well-known Robb coaster type and is 188.2 ft Jong, with a beam of 35.2 ft. Her gross tonnage is 927 tons and nett tonnage 423 tons. Her depth is 12.05 ft, and fully loaded, she will have a speed of ten knots. The deck equipment and all engine room auxiliaries are of the most modern electrical type. forward one being 42ft 6in by 16ft, and the after hatch 25ft Bin by 16ft. The equipment includes three sets of winch gear, two gears to be worked in No. 1 hatch. The steel hatch covers arc of the Patent McGregor type. Accommodation for officers and crew is of a high standard, situated amidships. The vessel is constructed of mild steel of British manufacture with freeboard corresponding to a mean draught of lift 6in. She has a deck of the single flush type with combined poop and bridge and with a topgallant forecastle. She has a raked stem, flat plate keel, and cruiser stern. She will have a hold accommodation of about 50,000 cubic feet. Hot water radiators are fitted in all sleeping quarters, the dining saloon and messroom. The propulsion machinery is placed aft of midships and consists of engines of the Atlas Diesel make, two cycle, of airless injection. The Puriri will be engaged in the ordinary coastal trading of the Company.
