“TERRIBLE TOLL OF LIFE”
BEING TAKEN ON OUR ROADS JUDGE OSTLERS WARNING I United Frees Association! WELLINGTON, 28th January. [ Thomas George Hannam, aged 26. of Palmerston North, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour by Mr Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court 10-day on a charge of negligent driving, causing bodily injury. "A terrible toll of life is being taken on our roads." said his Honour to the prisoner, “mostly caused by men like you with no sense of civic responsibility, no regard for the rights of others and no realisation that every man in a democracy, besides rights, has duties to his fellow men as well as to the State. “For years the Press has rung with warnings of the danger, but with regard .to you they have fallen on deaf ears. In this case your recklessness caused serious injury and you were indeed fortunate that it did not cause loss of life. The only way I can see to check such conduct is to inflict sharp punishment.”
