EARTHQUAKE-PROOF
1 ; QUETTA RECONSTRUCTION * RECENT TREMORS WITHSTOOD - BOMBAY, 28th December. 3 Recent earthquake tremors at f Quetta, the scene of the earthquake disaster three years ago, have left the c reconstructed buildings there entirely unaffected, said Mr C. W. Lemmon, r Consulting Architect to the Governu ment of India, during a visit to Bom-
i bay. The first part of the reconstruction ! was carried out largely in reinforced concrete. Later reinforced brickwork I was combined with it. ! The basis of the design, Mr Lemmon * explained, was a box-like monolythic | structure. In large buildings where one box would be too great, the buildi ing is virtually a series of monolythic i boxes separated by expansion joints os , a protection against the weather. ’ The original estimate for the recon- , struction of Quetta was seven crores • of rupees (approximately £5,250,000), . to be spent over seven or ten years. ■ This estimate, Mr Lemmon said, has ■ now been reduced.
