NELSON GIRLS’ CLUB

FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR The Nelson Girls’ Club opened their activities for the year 1939 with a successful meeting held in the Mayfair Tea Rooms last night, when Mrs J. P. Jamieson, the president, was in the chair. In a short address to the girls, Mrs Jamieson outlined the ideals of the club, which were to foster a spirit of friendliness between girls of all classes and professions, and to give them an opportunity to meet on equal ground and to learn one another’s point of view. The movement was a young one. said Mrs Jamieson, and in Nelson itself was not yet six month« old. A similar club had been form'’* 4 in Wellington, and it was hoped that in time every centre in New Zealand would have its Girls’ Club. As regards the Nelson Club. they were hoping that many more girls would join this year, and it was arranged to appoint a hostess for each evening, so that any girl attending for the first time would be made welcome and introduced to other members.

A comprehensive programme is being planned by the committee, who are endeavouring to cater for a wide range of interests. Conveners of circles were appointed as follow: Miss Beatrice Aydon and Miss B. Walters (Musical Circle!; Miss O’Leary (Dramatic Circle); Miss Aydon and Miss Powrie (Sewing Circle); Miss M. Carmichael (Bridge Circle). Hostess in Chief, Miss Powrie.

Meetings are to be held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, and the next meeting which will take place, at the Mayfair Tea Rooms on Tuesday. 7th February, will take the form of a sewing evening Members may take along any sewing they wish to do. and anyone requiring help with cutting out or fitting, are welcome to take such work with them to the Club. Miss Powrie and Miss J. Logan will be joint hostesses for this evening The resignation of Miss J. Neale as assistant-secretary and treasurer was received with regret, and a motion of thanks for the assistance she had given the Club was passed Miss K Burridge was elected assistant-secretary and treasurer by unanimous vote.
