SANDERS CUP
WIN FOR CANTERBURY j BEST SAILING OF CONTEST j fUnited Press Association! INVERCARGILL, 24th January. After securing a convincing win from Wellington in the fifth race at Bluff this morning, the Canterbury beat Huia sailed £ another great race in the afternoon to beat the Wellington boat Vanguard again and win the Sanders Cup contest for 1939. The sixth race was one of the best seen in a Sanders Cup contest, and though ' Vanguard was the favourite Huia well de- . served her win. Conditions were the best they have been for the contest and were ideaf lor Isailing. A fresh south-westerly wind blew 1 throughout the day and the sun shone brightly. Sailing times for the fifth race, which was over a windward and leeward course, , were:— Huia (Canterbury), 1.52.8, 1; Vanguard (Wellington;, 1.32.18, 2; Lynette 2 fOtago), 1.40.20, 3. Vorena (Southland), Marjorie (Auckland) and Lavina (Stewart Island) withdrew during the race. * Sailing times for the sixth and final race, over a triangular course, were : - Huia, 1.40.30, 1; Vanguard, 1.41.34, 2; Lavina, 1.44.30, 3; Vorena, 1.46.5, 4; Lynette 1.46.20 5. Marjorie withdrew during the race. Huia’s win in the morning was con- (] vincing but the race, which was sailed j under ideal conditions, produced some of the best sailing seen during the contest. A light south-westerly wind was blowing at the start of the race, but it fresh- j ened in the latter stages and helped to j give zest to the competition. The Canterbury boat led for the greater part of the race, and clever work by the Canterbury skipper helped Huia gradualy to draw further and further away from the rest of the competitors. Vanguard and Lavina had a keen tussle for second place in the early stages of the race, but the Wellington boat triumphed when the breeze freshened and had no , difficulty in holding her position behind J Huia to the finish. The Stewart Island * boat'outsailed Vorena and well deserved third place. Lynette and Marjorie were never in the picture. Marjorie took the lead in the sixth 1 race on the first beat to the weather mark, but Vanguard, Hui aand Lynette kept close till the run before the wind, when Huia took the lead from Vanguard and had the Wellington boat covered for s most of the rest of the way. Huia made no v race of it on the run to the finishing line. f \
