SHOOTING OF ARAB AT JAFFA

SENTENCE QUASHED ON API*EAL fU.P.A.—B.v Electric Telegraph— Copyright' JERUSALEM, 23rd January. The Court of Appeal quashed the sentence of one year’s imprisonment imposed upon the plain-clothes constable J. Mansell, holding that Mansell was justified in firing in view of the appalling conditions in Jaffa. The Court reserved judgment on Constable W. Wood in order to consider whether he fired the fatal shot.

A cablegram received from Jerusalem on 12th January stated:—A special Court convicted four British plainclothes constables who were charged with unjustifiably killing an Arab, whom they allegedly shot dead while he was attempting to escape from prison. William Wood was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for attempted manslaughter; J. Mansell, for an attempt to do bodily harm, was sentenced of imprisonment for one year; P Crossley and J. Crossley (who are not related) were bound over for a year at Jaffa. The defence pleaded that all the police regulations regarding escapees were observed. Wood and Mansell appealed against their conviction.
