ANOTHER LARGE SCORE FOR MANAWATU

S. McVICAR AND CAMPBELL IN FINE PARTNERSHIP BATSMEN IN COMPLETE CONTROL The end of the second day’s play in the Hawke Cup elimination match between Nelson and Manawatu saw Manawatu in an unbeatable position with a first inning's lead of 146 and 357 runs scored for the loss of seven wickets in the second innings. The threc-dav match will conclude at the Park to-day.

Nelson’s first innigs total was 191, in reply to Manawatu’s first innings of 337. Manawatu’s second strike resulted in some very bright batting with fairly even scoring, eight of the nine firs’* batsmen reaching double figures. Murchison completed a good double for the match with 63 and Gallichan scored all round the wicket for 46. However, six were down for 195 and seven for 23G. Then S. McVicar and I. Campbell became associated in a partnership which was worth 121 when stumps were drawn for the day. McVicar then had 82 and Campbell 48. The pair took complete charge of the bowling during the last hour’s play and placed the visitors in virtually an unbeatable position.

The Nelson fielding left much to be desired, quite a number of chances being missed. The lack of better bowling quality in the Nelson team was most apparent. L. Max was the most successful bowler and ended the day with five wickets to his credit for 80 runs.

THE PLAY DESCRIBED C. McVicar was 35 when he went out for a short run but had to return to his crease and was lucky not to be run out when the ball got in behind the top of the keeper’s pad. Broughton was then 27. J. Newman bowled McVicar. 68-1-35. The 68 put on by the opening pair took only 55 minutes. On the last ball of the over, his first in the innings, J. Newman took his second wicket getting Broughton leg before. He had taken two wickets for one run. 69-2-27. Murchison and Robertson were the new batsmen. They sent the scoring along at a good rate. Murchison was 24 when he was dropped in the slips off A. Newman. The field was being moved about to stop the scoring which slowed down considerably Murchison scoring nine singles in a row. Robertson went on to 20 without a boundary hit before a rising ball from Max hit his glove the catch going to A. Newman at first slip. 133-3-20. Murchison was untroubled by any of the bowling and a sound display saw him reach the half century. He was at 63 when he gave Masters a snick off Max. the keeper holding the catch. 156-4-63. The bowling was steady and Norris and Gallichan were slow. Twenty-four were added in the forty minutes after the tea adjournment and Norris was bowled for 18 by L. Max. 183-5-18. Gallichan was eleven when joined by Pollitt, the latter not appearing very n uch at home against Newman’s leg breaks. However, he went leg before to Max. Max had four for 62. 195-6-2. Gallichan twice spanked L. Max to the boundary past point. He drove Vass to the on boundary and two balls later made a firm hit through the covers for four. A splendid on drive to the fence made his 12 off the over and put 40 to his credit. After a bright display including seven boundaries he nut one up in the slips to R. Newman off Max 3nd was caught. 236-7-46.

McVicar was missed of! a ward chance in the slips off Vass's bowling when 13. McVicar and Campbell were very steady but they made a valuable partnership. McVicar and Campbell helped themselves to runs off Glover’s two overs getting ten off the first and 22 off the next. With free hitting McVivar got two twos and two boundary hits to bring up his 50. Campbell was then 38 and the partnership was then worth 84. Both were going out to the bowling and hitting freely and soon had

100 for the partnership. The bowling was flagging badly, the Nelson skipper being in a quandary what to do for bowling changes. McVicar lifted one into the long field for three, making him 80. The total was 357 for seven at 1 stumps. MANAWATU First Innings 337 Second Innings C. McVicar, b J. Newman 35 B. Broughton, lbw., bJ. Newman .... 27 J. Murchison, c Masters, b Max .... 63 G.
