PETTICOAT RULE

LONDON COUNTY CHAIRMAN ' IBv Air Mail-Own Correspomfenn LONDON. 29th December. There i:. not the faintest doubt that ! in 1959 London will be under petticoat j rule. That is to say the London County I Council which controls most tilings in i the metropolis, will for the first time have a woman chairman presiding over its affairs. The lady selected by the Socialists for this distinction is Mrs Eveline M. Lowe, who has been a member of the L.C.C. since 1922. and served an apprenticeship to her impending office as deputy-chairman in 1929-30. Mrs Lowe is specially interested in child welfare and education, but Unlike so many ladies who specialise in these subjects, is not herself a spinster. She is the widow of Dr. G. L. Lowe, who was formerly a partner with Dr. Alfred Salter, M.P , who is Mr A. P. Herbert’s colleague as Oxford University's nominee to St. Stephen’s. Mrs Lowe is also chairman of the Departmental Committee appointed by the Board of Education on domestic instruction in our elementary schools. So possibly under h r r regime we may get some encouragement in domestic sciences. Most people would rather see the schools turning out good “generals” than mediocre balle- 1 rinas.
