TOURNAMENT OPENS AT MASTERTON fUnited Press Association! MASTERTON, 20th January. Beautiful sunny weather favoured the opening of the North Island tennis championships, being played iu conjunction with the Wairarapa association’s championship and handicap tournament, on the Mastertou club’s courts to-day. A steady north-westerly wind blowing down the courts, however, proved disconcerting at times. One of the highlights of the day was the meu’s championship singles mutch between S. Painter, the 17-year-old Wellington Wilding Shield representative, and W. J. Webster, late of Greytown.
There were no major surprises, P. Hawkesworth, the Wairarapa champion, ei sily won his singles against M. McLeod, of Martinborough; M. Ferkins had no difficulty in beating A. Mahupuka / and G 8. McLeod Recounted for I. Hall and R. McL. Ferkins beat O. M. Bold.
Miss Z. Castle, a ranked Wellington player, beat Mrs G. S. McLeod in the first round of the women’s singles, and Mrs Hawkesworth beat Miss I. Reader. One of the most interesting games in this section wus between Miss J. Betts and Miss L M. Shirrock, the latter winning J-fi, 7-5, 6-4.
