FAMOUS BARQUE
THE HERZOGIN CECILIE CAPSIZE IN HARBOUR (U.Pa-Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 18th January. The famous four-masted barque Herzogin Cecilie, which was wrecked on the Hampstone Rook in April, 1938. after a voyage from Australia wlh wheat, and later was towed io Selcombe harbour, has capsized and disappeared.
The Finnish barque Herzogln Cct he retched Falmouth on 23rd April winning the grain-laden vv'ndjammers rare from Australia for that year in r. passage of 86 days from Port Lincoln. She was proceeding from Falmouth to Ipswich on the night of 34th April when she struck the Hampstone Rpck. near Salcombe, in a fog. Distress signals were sent up at 3 a.m. next day and the Salcombe lifeboatmen saved the crew.
The Herzogin Cecilie was the largest sailing ship on Lloj;d’s Register. She was built at Bremerhaven in 1902. Her mainmast was nearly 200 ft high and she had a total canvas spread of 56,000 ft.
