LISBON EXPLOSION
ATTEMPT AGAINST PREMIER FIFTEEN PERSONS SENTENCED PA.— By Electric Telegraph— Copyright LISBON, 15th January. After an eleven days’ sitting and a twelve hours’ retirement a special military tribunal sentenced fifteen persons to terms of imprisonment ranging from 15 years to 28 years in connection with the attempt against Dr Antonio Salazar, on 4th July, 1937, when a bomb exploded near the Prime Minister’s car. A cablegram received from Lisbon on sth July, 1937, stated: “A bomb placed in an electric cable tunnel with the intention of assassinating the Prime i Minister. Dr Salazar, while en route to Mass, exploded as he quitted his motorcar outside a private chapel, tearing a 12-foot hole in the street and damaging ! the fronts of houses. Dr Salazar was l unhurt, and smilingly entered and bade the service proceed, after whiV crowds cheered him.” j
