FIRE AT DEEP CREEK

TWO SHEDS AND STACKED TIMBER DESTROYED A ftre occurred at the Deep Creek sawmill of Messrs H. Baigent and Sons Ltd., last Wednesday evening. The fire destroying two timber sheds and a quantity of sawn timber in the vicinity of the sheds. The fire was first noticed by one of the workmen shortly after work for the day had been ceased, and despite the fact that fire-fighting appliances were immediately brought into use, the very strong wind caused the flames to spread rapidly through the sheds which were quickly a mass of flames. The fire then spread to some of the timber stacked near by. A plentiful supply of water and strenuous work by the mill staff and neighbours, confined the fire to this area, the sawmill, drying kiln, mill houses and other timber stacks being unharmed.
