LOYALIST DESTROYER INTERNED
ACTION FOLLOWS ENGAGEMENT OFF GIBRALTAR A BRITISH GUARD ABOARD rU.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph —Copyright' (Received 31st December, 9.45 a.m.) GIBRALTAR, 30th December. It is understood that the destroyer Jose Luis Diez is being interned. A British guard is already aboard . The Republican destroyer Jose Luis Diez was forced aground in the eastern beach during an engagement with nationalist warships, including the cruiser Canarias. One report said that the destroyer had previously rammed the nationalist minelayer Jupiter, sinking her. Nationalist warships were lying in wait when the Jose Luis Diez was trying to slip out of harbour here after being repaired following her engagement with nationalist warships earlier this month. It does not appear that the destroyer was hit, but seven members of the crew were killed and 11 wounded by shell splinters. Two British destroyers and one French are standing by assisting to remove casualties. No nationalist warships are allowed near.
