Frances Farmer and Leif Erikson. having finished "Escape from Yesterday.” with Akim Tamiroff, have left Hollywood to do a Broadway play. * * * * Lew Ayres says "Success at last! Louis B. Mayer has invited me to dinner —by telegram, of course.” Mayer evidently saw the performance which Ayres gave in “Holiday.” * # # * Nice for Robert Morley, who made an instant success in "Marie Antoinette,’’ that John Barrymore predicts certain stardom for him. Barrymore plays Louis XV. and Morley, Louis XVI. in the M.-G.-M. film. ¥ ¥ ¥ Charles Laughton in “The Vessel of Wrath,” has been crowding English picture houses. This is the first of the Mayflower productions, and will be followed by “St. Martin’s Lane.” The reason given for the popularity of “The Vessel of Wrath” is the amazing personal appeal of Laughton himself. * * * * Martha Raye means to try to get her sister, known as Melodye Raye into films. Melodye is 17 and has had no , experience of singing or dancing.

* * * * Humphrey Bogart, George Brent and Walter Abel will appear in “The Bigger They Are.” * * * * Sam Goldwyn has discovered a 15-year-old girl to groom for stardom. She starts at a salary of £55 a week, rising to £6OO if the options are taken up Her name at present is Earleyne Schools. * * * * So many fans, both in England and America, have demanded that Jeanette MacDonald should make a picture with her husband, Gene Raymond, that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are thinking seriously about the project. Difficulty is that both Jeanette and Gene are against it. Meanwhile, Jeanette is teamed for the fifth time with Nelson Eddy in ‘Sweethearts,” an all-colour film. * * * * Dick Powell is a college professor in his new Warner Brothers starring film. “Words With Music.” * * * * “Too Hot to Handle” has Clark Gable and Myrna Loy teamed for the seventh time.
