A MAORI DROWNED
BODY RECOVERED IN TWENTY FEET OF WATER flinked Press Association) ROTORUA, This Day. Hapeta Whata, a Maori labourer, aged 22, lost his life late yesterday afternoon as a result of being apparently seized with cramp while swimming at Otaramarae, Lake Rotoiti. A Maori girl who was rowing a boat nearby stated that Whata appeared to be skylarking in the water and attempted to race the She turned to row back to the shore and heard him call out to her to come back but, thinking he was still skylarking, took no notice. When she reached the shore another native told her that Whata was really in difficulties and she returned but the man sank before she could reach him. The police recovered the body in 20 feet of water.
