OBITUARY

MR LOUIS H. PALMER The death of Mr L. H. Palmer, son of the late John Palmer, which occurred last week, has removed one of the most highly esteemed residents of the Waimeas—one whose word was his bond and who never presumed to judge others, thus meriting the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He was born in Waimea West and was educated at the local public school and at the Bishop’s School. Mr Palmer then took up general farming including hopgrowing and was also engaged in general storekeeping at Waimea West and at Hope for some years. In local public affairs the late Mr Palmer took great interest. He was chairman of the Waimea West School Committee for some 25 years, a member of the old Waimea West Road Board, a director of the Nelson Hopgrowers’ Association from its inception till some 12 months ago—a period of about seven years—and a member of the vestry of St. Michael’s Church, Waimea West, being the Vicar’s Warden at the time of his death.

The late Mr Palmer leaves a widow (who was a daughter of the late James Bell, of Bellevue, Richmond) ana grown up family of one son and five daughters to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended. The son is Mr Gordon Palmer, and the daughters, Mesdames H. Knyvett, Takaka; E. Challies and J. Barton. Hope; D. Thomas, Belgrove; and Miss Marion Palmer, Lower Hutt.

The funeral took place at St. Michael’s churchyard, Waimea West and was largely attended by residents of the Waimeas and the city and from as far afield as Riwaka and the Mouteres. The bearers were: Messrs H. F., L.M., Claude and A. F. Palmer and E. Chaliles and C. Hall. The services at “The Gables”, in the Church, and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Canon Bloyce, and a

memorial service was held in St. Michael’s, Waimea West, last Sunday evening. Numerous floral tributes bore evidence of the sympathy of many friends.
