BRIDGING THE MAITAI
[To The Editcrl Sir—ln your issue of last Saturday, 17th instant, I saw some very fine pictures of beauty spots in and around Nelson, but I did not see one of the prettiest spots quite close to the town. For 40 years councillors have promised to bridge the Maitai River, which gives access to some beautiful country, healthy air, and within easy access to the town, yet giving all the advantages of a country life. Many would camp up there if the river were bridged, but at present, and for many months, the ford has not and is not now. close to the holidays, safe for a car to cross. I see Mr Atmore presented a petition to Mr Semple. I think the Government have been generous in offering £ for £. Why do the councillors not accept it? It is a benefit to Nelson alone. They talk of a road under the hill, which, would be ridiculous as it is all under water there when the river is up.—l am etc.
A SUFFERER. Nelson, 21st December.
