ROWING NOTES

NEW YEAR REGATTA AT PICTON (By "Old Rigger”) It is pleasing to sec that the Nelson Rowing Club are fully represented at the New Year Regatta to be held in Picton on Ist. January. Four crews will be journeying to Picton for this event. The club coach, Mr J. Ellis, has j spent a lot of time on try-outs, and his i efforts are fruitful as the boys are showing great form. J. Allen, strokek of the heavyweights. ! is an old hand at the game, and much iis expected from his crew. His next man at three is J. Sinclair, last year’s representative, and much can be expected from his efforts. W. Andrews at two was last year’s youth stroke, but

: has made good since then and is at home at stroke side. P. Costello at bow position is also an old hand and should j be relied on for his share of the race, i This crew should make a good showj ing as they were placed fifth out of 13 I crews last year. | F. McKenzie as stroke of the welters has many races to his credit. His three jis A. Louis. This man puts a punch in his work, and is also last year's representative. J. Turley at two should do well, but would do better if he settled down to training. Ricketts in bow is new to the sliding seat, although he has many races to his credit as a sea scout. The lightweight crew is the same as

the welterweight-, only Turley will be dropped owing to weight, and replaced by Mclver. who has put a lot into his training. The youth race is the race of the day. and “Old Rigger” expects a great race in their event. Ricketts, the youths’ stroke, rows a clean oar, and will make good. McMillan is a silent worker, but can be relied on for his share of the graft. Brown has his first chance in interprovincial races, and he can be relied on for his share also. Last year’s representative, Russell, is at home in bow, and should be fit for a mile with any youth. The club captain tells me the boys have the best of gear, and he. too. joins with me in wishing i the crews every success.
