MINISTER ADDRESSES STUDENTS 1 I United Plena Association) AUCKLAND. 9th December Addressing students of the Auckland Teachers’ Training College at the final (assembly to-day. the Minister of Education, Mr Fraser, said that a humble j beginning was made in 1879 when six students were trained in the Wellesley | Street School. To-day New Zealand I ha- 1 lour training colleges with more ! than 1500 students, and next year there ! would be approximately 1600. Auckland had the only really creditable college with adequate grounds and equipment, but before long other centres would be in a similar position. It was the Government’s intention to train sufficient teachers to enable overlarge classes to be reduced.
