ART UNION FUNDS

CHRISTMAS ALLOCATION OF SURPLUS PROFITS £12,000 AVAILABLE ! The sum of £12.000 from art union : funds is being allocated by the Gov- ! ernment as a Christmas gift to a numi ber of philanthropic and kindred insti- , tutions in New Zealand. The money i which forms the grants comes from the j accumulated surplus profits of the ' £SOOO alluvial gold art unions conduct;ed at intervals during the year. The i practice has been for some time to al- ! locate £SOOO after the drawing of each i art union to the various mayoral relief l funds of the Dominion. The balance of , j the profits from the returns of each art j union is kept till a sufficient sum has j ! been gathered for a special distribution j I among needy institutions, j “From the written requests received I from institutions for assistance. 1 wish ! the sum now to be allocated were larger.” said the Minister of Internal . Affairs, Mr Parry, in announcing last! ; evening the grants to be made from art j union funds. “So many bodies, -even ! private organisations, rendering all j kinds of service and serving social and j sports interests, apply for grants, large j and small, from art union funds that : there is not enough money to meet all applications however deserving most of j them may be. There may be. of course, other institutions beyond those J mentioned in the list. which feel.! from the work done in the community, j they should benefit from the special | Christmas allocation. it is thought, j however, that the institutions now to j be assisted are very representative of . the different phases of the country's social activities.” The following is a list of the mstitu- | tions to receive grants and the amount . allocated t.o each institution: £ j New Zealand Crippled Children j Society luuo 1 St. Vincent de Paul Society.
