AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING OF CLUB At a meeting of the Motueka Amateur Athletic Club, held last evening, there were present xMessrs W. M. Thomas (chairman of committee), J. Pocklington, W. Louis, H. Webb, I». V. Warren, E. Goodman, C. Uawken, F. Brown and J Boyce. Mr K. J. Ilolyoake wrote acknowledging the Club’s letter l-e-electing him patron for the coming season, and in reply stated that lie would be pleased to accept the position. The writer intimated that he would do everything possible to further sport in the district, and extende 1 best wishes to members for a most successful and enjoy'able season. Mr Dorrie Leslie, Wellington, in a letter to the secretary, Mr J. Pocklington, thanked the club for again electing him delegate to the Centre, and stated that h* hoped to visit Motueka for the Easter meeting. 110 informed the secretary that he would bo pleased to furnish any particulars lequued in connection with athletics. The secretary, Motueka Caledonian Society, wrote asking the Club’s co-opeia-tion iu respect to athletic events to he held at the Highland Gathering at Molueka, on 2nd January. The writer stated that any help would be greatly appreciated The secretary reported that a combined gala would he held at Kaiteritei’i by the Kaiteriteri improvement Society and the Motueka Returned Soldiers’ Association on 26th December, when sport events would be included in the programme. EXCELLENT CONDITION OF CRICKET GROUND

The chairman, after l-emarking on the excellent condition of the cricket ground, due to the keen interest taken in this area by the caretaker, Mr Green, moved

: that the Club write the Motueka Borough Council expressing appreciation of the condition of the ground, and complimenting the groundsman on his work in connection with the preparation of this reserve. The motion was seconded by Mr Boyce and carried. 1 The secretary reported that the jumping pit was in course of preparation for the season by Mr C. Haw ken and other members of the club. The chairman conveyed the club's thanks to those lesponsible for this work. MORE PRACTICE REQUIRED The secretary expressed the opinion that athletes were not going in for sufficient systematic training, and that the attendance on practice nights could be very much improved. He stated that he would not favour the sending away of athletes in the Mahar Cup team who did not train regularly ; it would be an expenditure by the Club that was not juslitied. The chairman suggested that those athletes who were taxing an interest in the spoi't should try and encourage the rest to take up training seriously. With a view to stimulating further interest and giving the local athletes outside competition Mr Warren agreed to endeavour to arrange for a party of Nelson athletes to visit Motueka on a date suitable to both parties. POINTS TROPHIES The secretary in making reference to the aggregate points trophies (senior and junior championship cups] pointed out that while these should be competed for as early as possible, he did not think the competitions would be fully supported until after the Christmas holidays. 1 fie question of a points cup for the cyclists was discussed, and the secretary was asked to make certain enquiries iu respect to a trophy.
