The first Hawke Cup cricket challenge of the season against Waikato, holders, ended in a debacle after only one day and a half’s play. Waikato beat Bay of Plenty by an innings and 211 runs. On a tricky wicket, which gave bowlers the upper hand throughout the match, Waikato, in their first innings, made 263. the principal scorers being A. J. Aitken 85 not out and J. Everest 79. Bowling for Bay of Plenty, L. R. Spring took four for 80 off 36 overs. R. Smith three for 87 and B. Budd two for 47. Bay of Plenty, in their first innings, made only 30 as a result of a great bowling feat by E. Everest, who took seven wickets for 15 off ten overs. In the second innings, Bay of Plenty made only 22, batsmen failing before the magnificent bowling of R. Clough, who was almost unplayable and who took eight wickets for 9 runs off eight overs. Waikato will defend the cup again at New Year against Marlborough.
