COUNTY COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING TRAFFIC INSPECTOR APPOINTED j . : FIVER VIEW DOMAIN IMFROYE- ! ■ MENTS [From Uur Own Correspondent [ Mr J. Downie presided at the monthly meeting of the Murchison County Counj oil, others present being Councillors J. i Rait, F. H. Newman, E. M. Brown, and jJ. T. Baigent. An apology for absence for received from Councillor T. A. Morel. In connection wit’> the maintenance of Irvine's and Thurlow's access on Johnstone’s, and Longford to Rait's road, it was decided that the Council agree to keep the roads in full maintenance after the completion of the Government grants for metalling. RIDING A CC'OU NTS Councillor Rait. gave notice that he would move at the next, meeting of the County Council to be held on 15th December, the following motion: "That the Council consider the abolishing of the Riding Accounts under Section 2 of the Counties Act, 1931.” COR R ESPO N D EN CE The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote in reference to the setting up of dis- ! trict committees under the Physical ! Welfare and Recreation Act, 1937. It was resolved that the Council should ' co-operate with the Minister and sug- I gest that the Council be appointed the ! District Committee for the Murchison ! district.

The Mam Highways Board asked the | assistance of the Council in combatting ! the wandering slock nuisance on State j and main highways, and suggested that | a county ranger be appointed with the 1 ; necessary authority to act on State highways. It was decided that the Council agree to the request for the County Ranger to take action against owners of stock found wandering on State highways. The Main Highways Board forwarded a copy of the annual report on main I highways. j The Main Highways Board advised ; ; that the girders that are being removed i 1 from the bridges on the State highway i are being retained for use during con- j struction work, but if any are available ! at a later date the Council will be ad- 1 vised. The Minister of Mines acknowledged receipt of the Council’s request for a grant of £250 for the metalling of the Howard road The Commissioner of Transport forwarded a warrant of appointment of J. H. McAuliffe as Traffic Inspector for the Murchison County. The South British and Standard Insurance Companies forwarded parti- ! culars of the insurance risk on Councillors while on County business. Mr J Loader, of Lower Maruia. asked for a reduction in rates on his property. It was resolved that the request could not be granted. The Murchison Public Library thanked the Council for their grant of £1 Is Mrs M. Wall, of Matakitaki. asked f that the chair over the Mataki river be repaired. It was resolved that the re- ' quest be granted. Mr A. Burt. Howard, advised that the ' contract for the year ending 31st Oc- 1 tober for the maintenance of the road 1 from Harley's Rock had expired. It I was decided that thj contract price of i £l2 be paid and that the contract be let i for another year. £ ! Messrs Houlker and Duke, architects, j asked for further information in con- £ nection with the fittings for the County | Clerkfs house. It was resolved that the matter be held over until the next ( meeting of the Council, and that the chairman interview the architects when ‘ he is in Nelson. COUNTY TRAFFIC INSPECTOR ' , It was decided that the County Clerk, 1 ' Mr J. H. McAuliffe. be appointed traffic ■ inspector for the Murchison County un- 1 dcr Section 2 of the Motor Vehicles j ' Act and Heavy Vehicle Regulations. \ 1 It was decided that .J. F. It was resolved that the necessary , timber be procured from Flowers’ mill for the repair of Scoltock’s bridge. f The chairman advised that he had given instructions that fresh applica- i j lions be called for the position of i County Engineer.
