HYMNS INSTEAD OF SERMONS
Except at a few special services, the ; Rev A. W. Reeves, vicar of Longstone, Derbyshire, did not preach any sermons during his holiday period. Writing in I his parish magazine, he stated that be- : cause of the high cost of living he proposed to spend most of his holidays at home, except for a few days in camp ! with Boy Scouts. “The vicar, thereI fore, asks your indulgence this summer in being relieved from the necessity of ; preparing and preaching a few sermons.” he continues. “In any case, a church service is an act of worship without a sermon; indeed, some of our sermons may even be a distraction io worship—though, we admit, of coursu, they should not be.”
