HITLER’S CHARACTER
GREATNESS ADMITTED ENGLISH WRITER’S SUMMARY LONDON, 23rd November. That Herr Hitler is a great man in spite of his neurosis is the verdict of Captain A. L. Kennedy, one of the leader-writers of ‘ The Times,” who has closely studied the Fuhrer. In an article in the “Spectator” Captain Kennedy says: “Herr Hitler has divided, misled, cajoled and intimidated rival nations. He is a fanatic, yet a calculator, a dreamer, yet a thinker, an artist yet a man of action, a blaring demagogue, a crafty politician and a gambler.
“Herr Hitler has the power of exploiting the immense energies of the German people, which he found in a dormant condition. One of the secrets of his success is that he is an ascetic adventurer, sternly self-disciplincd. “He never allows the people to think they can live in slothful ease. The unflabbiness of his philosophy or way of living docs not allow of the dissipation of his energies. Celibate, a teetotaller and a vegetarian, he averages five hours of sleep and continuously and relentlessly pursues his single aim —the aggrandisement of Germany.
“It is a grievous mistake to imagin. that Herr Hitler’s first object is ;
peaceful Europe. He plays on the best and the worst feelings of others appealing to the chivalry of youth and calling blackguardism to his aid. He exploits gentlemanliness and also unscrupulousness, and takes advantage of every slip by his enemies, all to one end a greater and ever greater Germany.
“Herr Hitler regards words as mer diplomatic conveniences, but it i otherwise with the written word would trust a declaration signed b him, hence the value of the documcn he and Mr Chamberlain signed a Munich.”
