DUKE OF KENT

POST IN AUSTRALIA RESIDENCE AT CANBERRA CANBERRA, 18th November. The announcement that the Duke of Kent has been appointed Governor-Gen-eral of Australia and will assume residence at Canberra toward the end of next year has focussed fresh attention upon the national capital. ’1 he Duke is the third member of the Royal Family who has been associated with Canberra. His Majesty, when Duke of York, inaugurated the new capital in 1927, and previous to that the Duke of Windsor laid the foundation stone of the capital. His Royal Highness will occupy Yarralumla, former homestead of an early pastoral holding, which faces a most beautiful vista of distant ranges of changing tones of blue. They are the peaks and ranges of the Australian Alps, snowcapped in winter, and the Duke, who is a.-i enthusiastic skier, will be interested in Mount Franklin, less than 40 miles away, which is being developed as an Al. pine Sports centre. A magnificent scenic road has been constructed to enable the area to be reached and although the road surface is not yet as good as a suburban highway, it has already enabled hundreds of persons to indulge in alpine pastimes. Accommodation questions have been given much consideration and the Canberra Alpine Club has already erected a temporary chalet to make it possible for members to stay overnight.
