SEAPLANES TO ALIGHT ON AIR CASHIONS

Air cushions to help seaplanes to land and take off in choppy water, and as an aid in preventing aeroplane disasters at sea, have been demonstrated at Buffalo (New York State) They have been devised by two members of the first expedition which Rear Admiral Richard Byrd took into the Antarctic in 1928-30. The “cushions,” made of airship fabric, are shaped into two cigar-like floats for light aeroplane use. It is claimed that choppy water not only sometimes affords bad landing but not infrequently punctures conventional netal floats and hulls of seaplanes. Demonstrations show that the air floats landed the machine easily and apparently without vibration.
