MAN AND BOY KILLED
ON CANTERBURY FARM TREE FALLS WITHOUT WARNING (United Press Association! CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. When without warning a large wattle tree fell on their farm at West Eyreton yesterday afternoon. Herbert George Bailey and Robert Hutchison received severe internal injuries and injuries to the back, from which they died. Bailey was 14 years of age and Hutchison was a single man aged 68 years. Hutchison and the boy, who were employed on the farm, were walking together past the tree when it fell on them without any warning. The boy was pinned under the tree for about a quarter of an hour. Another man, W. Cunningham, who was walking about 12 feet ahead of the other two, escaped injury. There was no wind at the time of the accident, and it is believed that the tree, which had grown with a lean, fell because of the uneven strain on its roots. The ground was soft after yesterday’s heavy rain and the roots were torn away when the tree fell.
