MEMORIAL PROPOSED

LATE SIR G. RICHARDSON j EX-SERVICEMEN'S TRIBUTE 1 Proposals for an ex-servicemen’s || memorial to the late Major-General g Sir George Richardson were submitted || to the quarterly meeting of the Auck- f| land Returned Soldiers’ Association = on Thursday night, by the president, Mr || J. W. Kendall, and after discussion the M matter was deferred for further con- §i sideration of the form that the |j memorial should take. Mr Kendall said that from his own §§ acquaintance with Sir George he knew |§ that the latter had not favoured §j memorials which served no useful pur- || pose. He had discussed the matter f| fully with the executive and with || representatives of affiliated clubs, and = it had been agreed to suggest that the || memorial should take the form of a §§ cottage in permanent materials in the || association’s settlement scheme at |1 Muriwai. There was good reason to be- s lieve that financial support would be M received from all Returned Soldiers' fjj Associations in the Dominion and from §§ associations of ex-servicemen and ex- §§ servicewomen. In all probability a f§ general appeal would produce sufficient || funds to build two cottages. A motion on the lines of the chair- p man’s statement was proposed, but the || meeting adopted an amendment that || the matter be deferred and that the |§ erection of a memorial hall in the || settlement be considered. The president reported that a legacy || of £IOO from the estate of the late || Mr R. M. V. Abbott had been utilised p for the complete renovation of one of || the cottages on the association’s Muri- M wai property, and that work would M shortly be commenced on another, || Application had been made to the || Government for a share of art union I|| proceeds in aid of the scheme but no 1 M decision had been given.
