NELSON JOCKEY CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT SMALL TROUT ON PAST YEAR’S i ACTIVITIES GENERAL MEETING NEXT WEEK I The annual meeting of the Nelson ■ Jockey Club will be held on Wednesday. 7th December, when the following | review of the year's activities will be \ ' presented bv the president (Mr E. B. ; 1 Moore) : | "The annual races were held on Sat- j I urdav and Monday, 7th and 9th May, i I and we arc glad to say that our fields i j were better than in the previous season, | 1 but still not large enough. Alter very j j careful consideration the committee re- ; , instated the trotting events after a lapse | 1 of five years, and although the fields J ; were small, there was considerable in- j j terest attached to them and the results i I showed the action to be justified. It j j also enabled the number of races to be ' increased to 16 and the gallop horses available to be restricted to 12 races I instead of 14. | "The totalisator showed an increase nf £3508 (with two extra races, of course i and tlie gates an increase oi £52 17s 6d. "Mr Thomas Newman generously gave four trophies for the Nelson Cup. which led to a considerable amount of interest in the race, although the field was disappointingly small. Our thanks are also due to those generous supporters amongst the licensed victuallers who again contributed liberally towards the i stake for that race. j "For the coming season our dates at i present are set down for 29th April and | Ist May, which unfortunately clash with j both South Canterbury and Dannevirke I tat Woodville). This matter will have j to be carefully considered by the incoming committee, as the effect on our fields may be serious. I "The accounts show a profit for the j vear of £l7O 2s 3d. This result, while immensely better than the Kiss of £10(5 ( in the previous year, shows the great j difficulty the committee has in framing its programme and making its arrangej meats, and we earnestly appeal for more support in the matter of membership. The club races only once a year and provides the only, racing available tor a population of 30,000 ! "Election of officers: For the office of | Patron. Mr Thomas Newman, a life member and a very staunch supporter of racing over a long period, has been nominated. Mr E. B. Moore has been nominated for re-election as president. For the positions of three vice-presi-dents. Messrs A. Thomson, J. Newman and F. Atkinson, are the only persons nominated For the committee of 11 the required number of nominations have been received, namely, Messrs V. C.'ox, F. J. Bowers. 11. Gay, C. B. Hodgson. G. Hogg. F. O. Hamilton. G. W. Macdonald, J. Newman, H. R Russell, I E. S. Merrick and C. C. Thomson.”
