70,000 VOLUNTEERS
DRIVE IN AUSTRALIA ALTERNATIVE IF FAILS COMPULSORY TRAINING AGAIN CANBERRA. 10th November A spectacular drive to increase the strength of the Australian militia forces to 70.000 men is being initiated immediately by the wartime Prime Minister and present Minister of External Affairs, Mr W. M. Hughes, and the Minister of Naval. Military, and Air Defence. Brigadier G. A. Street, assisted by the Minister of Civil Aviation and Defence Works. Mr H. V. Thorby. It is generally understood that if the campaign fails the Government will be compelled to revert, to compulsory ‘training, to which the Prime Minister. 1 Mr J. A. Lyons, is at present opposed.
