SKATING

A large and enthusiastic crowd attended the opening of the skating season in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Saturday night. The spectators enjoyed the thrills and spills from the balcony overlooking the skating floor which was packed with young patrons eager to master the skating art. During the evening an i ex h*bition of various waltz steps and I two-step movements on skates was given by Miss Elizabeth Benge, of Wellington. and partner. Mr Reg Phelps. The polished display given by these talented skaters was received with applause and more of this type of skating will be awaited. The Monte Carlo, partners, and ti io skates are among the novelty items that are to be introduced into the skating programme. When local skaters have had the necessary practice to gain proficiency the management intend to conduct a series of basketball tournaments on skates. Leicagraph cameramen had a busy time taking photos of those present, and when the final whistle blew bringing to a close the night's entertainment all were reluctant to leave.
