Alongside the body was a pea rifle which an employee had just been using to shoot goats, and which he had left near the back door of the homestead. After having afternoon tea with an employee and a friend, Jackson went outside to get potatoes to cook for the evening meal when a shot was heard. He was found fatally wounded.
