NEWS AND NOTES
Pasture Clean-up. Ensilage making in North Taranaki is being handled as fast as machines and men can deal with the problem. Crops are up to average and it is reported that cutting has been facilitated this year because of the complete “cleanup” which the pastures were given during the winter. New Butter-making Process. A new process for making butler .is now in operation at the Cobden (Victoria) butter factory. In the process, which is revolutionary, cream is pasteurised by the “Flash” method and sent direct through the separator to a salting vat and then to a machine which turns the liquid into butter in a few seconds. The process follows considerable research, with which Mr G. Loftus Hill became associated for sofrie time, following his resignation from the dairy technology staff of the Australian Department of Agriculture. Sweet cream must be added in the process, which, it is claimed, results in a saving of £6 a ton. Favourable comment has been made on test shipments overseas. The new method, however, requires collection of cream twice a day, and this will hamper its adoption by most country factories.
