VTERINARY SCHOLARSHIPS

TO BE GRANTED BY GOVERNMENT j KOI R NEXT YEAR, WELLINGTON, This Day. Four veterinary scholarships have been granted for 1939 by the New Zealand Government. Each is of an annual value of £IOO, and the selected candidates are to train at the Sydney University Veterinary School or at a vetei inary college in the United Kingdom. Students attending the Veterinary School in Sydney will also have their annual return fare between New Zealand and Australia paid by the Government, but no transport Allowance is given should a student undergo his training for the veterinary profession at one of the Horns* colleges Six scholarships in veterinary science were given in 1936 and four in 1937. All of the 1936 group went to the Sydney Veterinary School, and assuming they pass their final examinations next month they will return to the Dominion at the end of the year as fully qualified veterinary surgeons. These students entered the school under the old four years' course, and as they had already passed tiie requisite subjects to entitle them to the first year's remission of the course they will he the first to qualify under tin* bursary inaugurated by the present Government to enable New Zealand students to take up careers as veterinarians. REMISSION OF ONE YEAR The scholarships the Government is now offering are tenable for five years for students entering the Sydney Veterinary School, with a reduction to four years in the case oT students possessing qualifications ip certain subjects. The duration of the scholarship and the remission allowed is the same for students training in the United Kingdom. The first session at the Sydney school will start in March, and tiv.i at the colleges in the United Kingdom in October. Intending applicants must have passed the. University entrance examination, and preference will he given to those who have passed the medical intermediate examination or its equivalent in the required subjects—zoology, botany, physics, and organic and inorganic chemistry. Students entering the Sydney school will be required to undertake practical train ing in veterinary work in New Zealand to the satisfaction of the Department of Agriculture during the three months’ annual vacation. Successful applicants will be required to enter into an agreement with the Government that they will undertake veterinary work within the Dominion for at least five years after qualifying, either in the, services of the department if required, or otherwise in seme capacity approved l>y the department.
