SHOW ARRANGEMENTS FINALISES RECORD ENTRIES I From Our Own Correspondent)

The Motueka Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s final meeting, prior to the show, was held in the secretary's office last evening, when Mr L. Canton presided over a large and enthusiastic gathering of members. CORRESPONDENCE The secretary. Municipal Band, wrote stating that the Band was prepared to supply music at the Show on 3rd December on certain conditions, as set forth in his letter. On the proposal of Messrs F. C. Batchelor and D. Thompson it was decided that the Motueka Band's tender of £7 10s be accepted. The Secretary, Nelson Automobile Association, advised that the request for the services of their Patrol Officer at the forthcoming show had been acceded to on the understanding that adequate assistance was rendered to him. “We realise,” stated the writer, “that last year was your first experience of this, and that your Association’s officials had their hands pretty j full but we would like to be sure that the Patrol Officer would have a little more attention and assistance on this

The Town Clerk, Motueka Borough Council, advised that the Council would be happy to allow the A. and P. Association the use of the Aerodrome road on Show Day.

The Secretary, Waimea Power Board, acknowledge the Association’s letter requesting tha* the show ground at Marchwood Park be connected with the power supply on Show Day, and advised that this matter would be attended to. Reporting on the entries for this year and the progress of the Motueka A. and P. Association generally the secretary (Mr O. C. Wilkinson) said that in 1935 we embarked on the laying down of a new foundation for agriculture in the Motueka district. Agricultural and Pastoral pursuits must be fostered and advance in cultural methods was best served by observations of individual effort. “In support of this contention I propose to review the progress of this Association and some of its effects on the producers of this district. “In 1935 we commenced with a schedule of 204 classes with 740 exhibits excluding school classes. In 1936 these classes were increased to 263 with 1033 exhibits. In 1937 the classes were increased to 300 classes with 1025 entries, and in 1938 to 341 classes with 1138 entries and 600 school entries. “During the period a substantial increase in the introduction of stud stock has taken place among the sheep, cattle and pig breeders of the district.” On the motion of Mr W. Robinson, the secretary was instructed to write the Nelson A. and P. Association, thanking it for placing the secretary's office at the disposal of the Motueka Association for the purpose of accepting entries for the show to be held on 3rd December. A vote of thanks on the motion of ] Mr A. G. Green was accorded the secretary, Mr O. C. Wilkinson, for his efforts in obtaining entries for the forthcoming show. Mr C. Newport moved that in future winners be asked to return all cups to the Association not later than Ist November each year. NEW MEMBERS The following were nominated and elected members of the Association. Messrs Gordon Field (Hope), L. Cowin (Motueka), Godfrey Deck (Harakeke). H. Canton (Commercial Bank of Australia, Motueka), Albert A. Chang (Motueka). C. F. Fenemore (Stanley Brook), L. H. Hammond, J. A. Smith (Motueka', J. W. Win (Dovedale), A Win, Tom cßatson (Ngj timoti), Hubert Atkins (Riwaka), Tim Warner, W. Martin (Wakefield), L. P. Russ (Richmond), Harold Trewavas (Motueka). The secretary reported that with the addition of members as above the total membership now stood at 274. In reply to a question he stated that subscripitons were coming to hand freely. OFFICIAL OPENING The secretary reported that he had received information to the effect that the Prime Minister, the Hon. M. J. Savage, would be unable to be present to officially open the show, but would arrange for one of his Ministers to perform the ceremony. Mr Wilkinson said that he understood the Hon. F. Jones. Postmaster-General, would probably be the Minister to visit Motueka on the 3rd December to open the show. Mr F. Teece, vice-president, reported that he had suggested that the Bush and Bird Preservation Society exhibit some of its diaries at the Motueka Show. He had received the following letter from the secretary of the society: “Thank you for your kind suggestion assisting to spread the knowledge of our Bush and Bird Preservation Society Shield Competition by maens of exhibiting it and some of the diaries at the A. and P. Show. “I will place your letter before the committee but fear it will not be in time to do anything about it this year, as we are not holding another meeting until early in December.”
