APPLICATION BY RAILWAY DEPARTMENT ADJOURNED BY TRANSPORT AUTHORITY 1 United Press Association• TE KUITI, 24th November. As a result of protests from the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance and several carters’ associations, the application of the Railways Department for a goods route transport service for five miles on each side of the highway, was adjourned by the No. 1 Transport Authoriyt, Mr E. J. Phelan. At the sitting in Te Kuiti to-day Mr Phelan gave a definite indication that as far ts he was concerned the flvemile provision in the application, which had caused carriers such concern, would not enter into consideration, though some provision might be necessary to meet special conditions For the Railways Department Mr Reesop said the five-mile provision was only to permit special work in Te Awamutu and Otorohanga. but Mr Walsh, representing the South Auckland carriers, said that though this cleared the air somewhat, the department had according to Mr Reesop, yet to formulate its policy and that policy might yet. prejudice local carriers. The department ihould be granted a route license extending only to Otorohanga and not to Te Kuiti. The Otorohanga Carriers’ Association opposed the application in its entirety, holding that the Railways Department should show the need for the service which it had In the past so consistently opposed.
