ARCHBISHOP JULIUS MEMORI AL
PROJECT COMMENDED TO PEOPLE: OF NEW ZEALAND APPEAL FOR FUNDS The Archbishop Julius memorial fund, with which extensions will be made to; the Christchurch Cathedral, has nowj j reached £3789 13s. It is planned to ex-j : tend the appeal to centres outside Can- j terbury. Not only are there many Can-/ terbury people now in other parts of' | New Zealand, but the Archbishop as! | Primate of New Zealand was known J j and honoured throughout the Demin- . ! The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hen. M. ■ J. Savage, has written to the Mayor of I Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane)! paying a tribute to the memory of the ' ; Archbishop and giving his support to : the memorial appeal, commending it to j I the people of the Dominion. | The Minister for Industries and Comj merce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in a] letter to the Rev. W. E. D. Davies, j | organiser of the appeal, has also com- ; j mended the memorial project to the! j pepple. j It is most desirable that a worthy I i memorial should be erected as a testi- ’ mony to the life and work of the late| Archbishop Julius, who was a great] citizen and a great man. He did much for Canterbury and also for the Domin-i ion. The people of Canterbury in particular are aware of the vigour and power of his leadership and what it. accomplished. The only adequate memorial would be * one that would be nearest to the late Archbishop's own wishes. To the last I he displayed a definite interest in the i
Cathedral and expressed strongly the desirability of extending the present chancel in order: »1) That the chancel might be more effectively lighted by day: (2) that the chancel might be in better proportion to the rest of the building, and (3) that adequate seating accommodation might be provided within it for those participating in services on national, civic and special occasions. He also desired that suitable vestry accommodation should be added rs the present vestry space does not allow for the dignified reception of national, civic, naval, military, etc. representatives. the accommodation being totally inadequate. The proposed extension of the chancel eastward and the addition of vestries on the north and south sides would be a most dignified addition to the cathedral and a worthy memorial. It is customary and desirable that the memorial to a bishop should be erected in the cathedral church of his See. The project would cost approximately £25.001).
