STOLE TWO FAIRS OF SHOES NEW ZEALAND WOMAN FINED [By Air Mail—Special Correspondent! LONDON, 13th August. An attractive widow who was stated to have coine to England some years ago ironi New Zealand, where her husband died, was lined £5 at Gloucester this week tor stealing two pairs of shoes from a shop. Vet only three mouths ago she had inherited £20,000. 'lhe .woman was Mrs liesla M. Nowell, of Cheltenham. She had gone to the sale, selected a pair of shoes, and had put down the money to pay for them, her counsel pleaded. '1 hen she walked off without waiting for the change. For she was absent-mind-ed. W hicb, he added, explained the other pair of shoes, too. She had just forgotten to pay for them. But the Bench registered a conviction. bor years Mrs Nowell looked after a cousin of the famous statesman William Ewart Gladstone—Mrs Adelaide Alleu, of Cheltenham. It was by her will that Mrs Nowell inherited nearly £20,000. Time to consider the question of an appeal was granted by the magistrates.
