ACTIVITIES OF Y.M.C.A.

iTo The Editor] Sir,—l have read with great interest the report published in your issue of last night, concerning the annual meeting ;»f the local Y.M.C.A. It is indeed gratifying to know that the affairs of the association are such that the-control has again been placed in the hands of a local board of directors. What is of greater interest, however, is the number of young persons taking part in the activities of the association—s 26 m all. It is obvious, Bir, that an organisation providing healthful activities for so large a nUmbei as this, in a city of the size of Nelsdn, must be a considerable power for good ip the community and, therefore, deserving ol all the support that can be given it by the citizens as a whole.

It is stated in the report that the immediate need of the association, “to enable the new board to push ahead with the extension programme unhampered, ’ is £3OO, ot which about £IOO has recently been subscribed, leaving a balance of £2OO. I Lake it that this is required to wipe out certain debts that are still outstanding. 1 his sum is not large and it is surely not beyond the people of this city to provide it.. r l here are one or two points that are not made clear in the report and that should be of interest to many people : 1. Exactly what is the nature of the extension programme referred to? 2. If the association can be given a dear start, free of debt, just how much is likely to be required to enable it to function properly and to keep out of debt m the future? 3 What proportion of this amount is likely to be paid by the young people who arc directly benefiting by their contact with, the association and what proportion must be provided by the general public? —I am etc., “INTERESTED.” Nelson, 15th July.
